The Algerian national team’s journey in the African Cup of Nations began today when it faces Angola, in the fourth group competitions.
The year 2023 was a breathtaking year for the Algerian national football team, following its failure to reach the 2022 World Cup and disappointing participation in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Coach Mal Belmadi began to restore some balance in the Algerian national team and achieved a year without any defeat in 2023, while he enters the African World Cup with a squad that still relies on the “2019 African Champions.”
Belmadi is still relying on Riyad Mahrez (32 years old), Sofiane Feghouli (34 years old), Baghdad Bounedjah (32 years old), Issa Mandi (32 years old), Nabil Bentaleb (29 years old), and Youssef Blayli (31 years old), to repeat the achievement of the 2019 African Nations.
But the “Desert Warriors” team is not devoid of some impressive new faces, most notably Rayan Ait Nouri, Wolverhampton’s English defender, Mohamed Amoura, Union Saint-Geloise’s Belgian striker, Fares Chaaibi, Eintracht Frankfurt’s German playmaker, and Houssem Aouar, who recently declared his allegiance to Algeria.
The picture will become much clearer on Monday evening, when Algeria faces Angola, and the Algerian fans will be able to find out whether the “old guard” is still capable of achieving the achievement and conquering the leaders of the African continent.
