In a notable development in African football, Morocco is set to withdraw from hosting the 2026 Africa Women Cup of Nations, which was scheduled to take place next March on Moroccan soil.
The anticipated Moroccan decision comes amid tensions following recent disputes between the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Observers consider this a calculated move by Morocco, reflecting its refusal to bear additional organizational burdens amid what it describes as a “lack of neutrality and fairness” within CAF.
Meanwhile, CAF President Patrice Motsepe finds himself in a difficult position, especially after the withdrawal of a country as prominent as Morocco.
Reports indicate that he is relying on his government to manage the crisis and ensure the tournament is successfully organized in South Africa on a tight schedule.
Current indications also suggest that Morocco is likely to withdraw its bid to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations, sending a clear message to CAF that the kingdom will no longer serve as the continent’s “permanent savior” for tournaments without guarantees of fair organization and officiating.
