URGENT PRESS STATEMENT
Zehejna Khalas Condemns the African Union Commission’s Endorsement of Al-Burhan’s Dialogue
31 August 2026
Zehejna Khalas Movement expresses its deep concern and unequivocal rejection of the statement issued today by the African Union Commission welcoming what has been presented as a “Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue” led by Army Commander General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.
We view this endorsement as a deeply troubling departure from the role the African Union is expected to play in supporting peace, rejecting military coups and authoritarian rule, and safeguarding the unity and stability of African states. A process does not become national merely because it is described as such. A dialogue shaped and controlled by one party to the war, and conducted within areas under its military control, cannot credibly serve as a pathway to ending a war that continues to devastate Sudan and drive the country further towards fragmentation.
For Zehejna Khalas, the immediate national and moral priority is not to confer political legitimacy on any party to the war, but to stop the war and open the way for a genuine, inclusive peace process involving Sudanese civilian, revolutionary, and societal forces in all their diversity, with Sudan’s unity, the protection of its people, and a democratic civilian transition at its core.
We therefore draw the attention of the African Union and the wider regional and international community to the increasingly clear position of Sudanese civilian and revolutionary forces opposed to the war: the will of the Sudanese people cannot be reduced to a dialogue produced by military authorities, nor should international mediation become a channel for reproducing legitimacy for military rule or for a political reality imposed by war.
We caution that treating this initiative as a credible pathway to a political settlement, without a serious cessation of hostilities and without guarantees of independence and inclusivity, risks entrenching Sudan’s current fragmentation rather than overcoming it, and weakening the prospects for peace rather than advancing them.
Accordingly, Zehejna Khalas calls upon the African Union Commission to reconsider its position and redirect its efforts towards ending the war, protecting civilians, and establishing a genuinely inclusive and impartial Sudanese peace process—one that does not privilege any party to the conflict and does not allow dialogue to become an instrument for legitimizing the status quo imposed by war.
The Sudanese people rose in December demanding freedom, peace, and justice. Their revolution was never a mandate to replace one form of authoritarianism with another, nor to divide their homeland under any political pretext.
Sudan is one homeland. Peace cannot be built by legitimizing war, nor through a dialogue monopolized by one of its parties.
