UN Mission Calls for Expanding the Arms Embargo to Cover All of Sudan
Sudanese Voices Fri/ Sept/ 4th
[Sky News Arabia]
The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan recommended that the Security Council expand the arms embargo imposed on Darfur to cover the entire Sudanese territory, warning that the flow of weapons and military technology to both parties to the conflict is worsening the targeting of civilians and prolonging the war.
The mission affirmed that the Sudanese Armed Forces, (SAF), the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)and forces allied with both have committed violations that may amount to war crimes, including targeting civilians, killing, arbitrary detention, torture, sexual violence, looting, forced displacement, and attacks with an ethnic character.
The report noted that airstrikes and drone attacks killed more than a thousand people during the first five months of 2026, and struck hospitals, schools, markets, and sites housing displaced people.
The mission called for halting the transfer of weapons, drones, and their components, and military support to both parties to the conflict, along with expanding the investigation into the sources of the army’s weapons and external support networks.
The report is scheduled to be presented to the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, which convenes from September 7 to October 9
