I strongly condemn the aerial bombardment carried out by the air force of the Islamist army against the areas of Al-Zurug and Gharir in North Darfur State, which resulted in a horrific massacre claiming the lives of dozens of innocent civilians, including women and children. This constitutes a full-fledged crime and adds to a long record of systematic violations committed against civilians in Sudan.
Targeting safe villages, bombing residential areas, and using military aircraft against unarmed civilians constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity under international humanitarian law, and cannot be justified under any military or security pretext.
We hold the army leadership and the Islamist movement fully responsible for this crime, and we condemn the shameful silence of the international community, which has encouraged impunity and allowed mass killings to continue without deterrence. This silence is no longer neutrality; it has become indirect complicity in crimes committed against civilians.
We call for an urgent and independent international investigation, accountability for those who issued and carried out the bombing orders, the imposition of effective measures to protect civilians, and an immediate halt to the use of air power against the population.
The blood of innocent civilians in Darfur will not fade with time, nor will it be concealed by cold statements or international indifference. Justice is an obligation, accountability is a necessity, and silence is a crime.
